What's Included
Three Core Coverages in One Policy
A BOP bundles the coverages that nearly every small business needs into a single policy — usually at a lower cost than buying each separately.
General Liability
Covers third-party bodily injury, property damage, and advertising injury claims. If a customer slips in your store, a client trips in your office, or a diner is injured at your restaurant — general liability pays for medical bills, legal defense, and settlements.
Commercial Property
Covers the building you own or lease, plus your business personal property — furniture, equipment, inventory, signage, and supplies. Protects against fire, theft, vandalism, storms, and other covered perils.
Business Income / Interruption
If a covered event like a fire or storm forces you to temporarily close, business income coverage replaces your lost revenue and pays for ongoing expenses — rent, payroll, utilities, and loan payments — while you recover.
Customize Your BOP
Endorsements & Add-On Coverages
Every business is different. A BOP can be customized with endorsements to fill gaps specific to your industry, your location, and your operations.
Equipment Breakdown
Covers repair or replacement when essential equipment fails — HVAC systems, refrigerators, ovens, computers, and machinery. Standard property coverage often excludes mechanical breakdowns not caused by a covered peril.
Spoilage Coverage
If a power outage or equipment failure causes food, beverages, or perishable inventory to spoil, this endorsement covers the loss. Essential for restaurants, grocery stores, florists, and any business with refrigerated stock.
Liquor Liability
Required for restaurants, bars, and any business that serves or sells alcohol. Covers claims arising from intoxicated patrons — bodily injury, property damage, and legal defense costs from alcohol-related incidents.
Cyber Liability
Covers data breach response, notification costs, and liability if customer payment information or personal data is compromised. Increasingly important for any business that processes credit cards or stores customer data.
Professional Liability (E&O)
Covers claims arising from professional errors, omissions, or failure to deliver services as promised. Essential for consultants, accountants, IT firms, real estate agents, and other professional service businesses.
Hired & Non-Owned Auto
Liability coverage when employees drive their personal vehicles or rental cars for business purposes — deliveries, client meetings, bank runs. Most BOPs don't include auto coverage without this endorsement.
Employee Dishonesty / Crime
Covers losses from employee theft, fraud, or embezzlement. Protects against internal risks that general liability and property coverage don't address — cash theft, inventory shrinkage, and fraudulent transactions.
Signs & Glass Coverage
Covers repair or replacement of exterior signs, plate glass windows, and door glass — whether damaged by vandalism, accidents, or weather. Important for retail storefronts and restaurants with prominent signage.
Water Backup & Sewer
Covers damage from water backing up through sewers, drains, or sump pumps. One of the most common claims for ground-floor retail and restaurant spaces, and typically excluded without this endorsement.
Retail Stores
Boutiques, gift shops, convenience stores, and specialty retail. Your BOP should cover your inventory, your storefront, and the customers who walk through your door every day.
Inventory and stock coverage at replacement cost
Customer slip-and-fall liability protection
Product liability for items you sell
Theft and shoplifting coverage
Signs, glass, and storefront protection
Restaurants & Food Service
Full-service restaurants, cafés, fast casual, food trucks, and catering. Restaurants face unique risks from kitchens, customers, employees, and alcohol service.
Kitchen equipment and commercial appliance coverage
Food spoilage from power outages or equipment failure
Liquor liability for alcohol service
Customer injury and food contamination claims
Business income for forced closures
Professional Offices
Law firms, accounting practices, consultants, real estate offices, and IT companies. Professional businesses need liability protection for both physical premises and professional services.
Office equipment, furniture, and computer coverage
Professional liability (E&O) for service-related claims
Client injury protection at your office
Cyber liability for data breaches
Hired & non-owned auto for employee driving
Why Bundle?
BOP vs. Buying Policies Separately
You could buy general liability and commercial property as standalone policies — but a BOP typically costs less and is easier to manage.
Lower premium — bundling usually saves 10–15% compared to separate policies
One policy, one renewal, one carrier — simplified management and fewer gaps
Business income coverage built in — often excluded or extra on standalone GL policies
Easier to add endorsements that coordinate across your liability and property coverages
Faster certificate issuance — one COI covers both your GL and property requirements
What a BOP Doesn't Cover
A BOP is a strong foundation, but it doesn't cover everything. You'll likely need to add:
Workers' Compensation — required if you have employees
Commercial Auto — for business-owned vehicles
Professional Liability — for service-related errors and omissions
Umbrella / Excess Liability — higher limits above your BOP
Employment Practices Liability (EPLI) — for harassment and discrimination claims
Flood & Earthquake — excluded from standard BOP property coverage
We help you build a complete program — starting with the BOP as your foundation, then layering on the additional coverages your business needs.
Why Knox for Your Business Owners Policy?
We've been insuring Main Street businesses since 1980. We know the coverages, the endorsements, and the carriers that work best for retail stores, restaurants, and professional offices.
Multiple Carrier Quotes
We compare BOP rates from Travelers, The Hartford, Nationwide, EMC, AmTrust, and others. More options mean better coverage at a better price for your specific business type.
Industry-Tailored
A restaurant BOP looks different from a law firm BOP. We match your endorsements — liquor liability, spoilage, E&O, cyber — to the risks your business actually faces.
Bundle Everything
We can combine your BOP with workers' comp, commercial auto, umbrella, and cyber into one program for simplified management and often better pricing across the board.
Claims Advocacy
When a pipe bursts in your shop or a customer files a claim, we help you through the process. We communicate with the carrier on your behalf and make sure your claim is handled fairly.
